Swim for Claire

Miami Masters hosted a Swimathon named “Swim for Claire” last Sunday, 5th December at their home pool, the Miami Aquatic Centre. Funds were being raised to fund badly needed research into Rare Ovarian Cancer that Claire Reaburn, an original member of the Miami Masters, has been surviving for the last seven years. Claire’s husband Peter was the founder of Miami Masters in 1986 and a previous President of Masters Swimming Queensland. Peter and Claire met through masters swimming after being introduced by mutual friend John Bonning.

85 swimmers swam varying distances including Miami Masters swimmers doing 30 and 60 minute swims, young ocean swimmers doing 60 x 50m on 50 and a mix of triathletes, Miami Masters members and ocean swimmers, swam 60 x 50m on 60. Over $15,000 was raised. Club members John and Judy Bonning, who run the Billabong Swim School in northern NSW, ran a swimathon for the kids and parents and raised $1500, while former Brisbane Southside member and English Channel swimmer, Phil Chappell swam 100 x 100m on 1.45 in Caloundra with mates and also raised $1500.

The swim was such as success, that Miami is considering hosting a similar event in 2022. Anyone interested in donating to fund research into rare ovarian cancer can do so at:  Ride for Research – Peter Reaburn – ROC Inc.
