Congratulations to Shiralee Bielenberg of QIP Ipswich City Masters, on achieving her 3 Million Metres award!

Shiralee with her Vorgee 3 Million Metres Award

How did you first become involved with swimming?

My mum took my sister and me to swimming lessons when we were very young and living in Mt Isa (Qld).  Not the most aquatic place in Australia….

What do you love about swimming?

It’s a beautiful feeling being in the water.  It’s my “me” time and “mental health” time.  It keeps me fit, which also means I can eat more chocolate.  Added bonus of seeing marine life when you’re swimming in the ocean.

When did you first join Masters Swimming?

2013.  I had been asked to join many years before, but I just thought masters swimmers were mad doing silly things like 800m fly!

Most memorable swimming moment?

Rottnest Channel Swim as a duo with my sister in 2019

Favourite events?

Most ocean swims.  Anything with warm, clear water!

How often do you swim, and where?

Usually 3-4 times a week.  Most of the time in the pool – IGS with Ipswich City Masters.  Since covid I’ve been swimming more at Redcliffe in the ocean with a few other mad, I mean, like-minded people.

What motivates and inspires you?

Anyone else who gets in the water and has a crack!

Favourite things? Likes and dislikes?

Likes – Ocean swims.  Dislikes – sprints, butterfly and cold water

Family

I’m married with two sons – none of them are swimmers.

Career

Podiatrist

Other interesting/little-known facts about you?

I beat Duncan Armstrong out of the water in the swim leg of a team triathlon

What would you say to someone who is thinking of becoming a Masters swimmer?

Don’t think twice.  You’ll look and feel fantastic from being fit. The friendships and camaraderie keep you mentally fit and happy too.

Competition winner from 2012!
