Sinkers Fun in Feb Meet Summary 2022

Our annual short course event attracted swimmers from Brisbane to the Atherton Tablelands with 43 swimming on the day across 11 teams. While our South East Queensland friends suffered through challenging weather and floods Mackay enjoyed a sunny, warm and humid day.

Swimmers and guests were greeted with a well-presented pool and surrounds with plenty of shade on offer courtesy of the early set up by sinkers members. On offer were 25-200m swims in all strokes plus IMs to challenge one’s fitness. While no records were set this year plenty of PBs were written and an informal relay was hastily put together to appease the team spirit at the pool.

The Sinkers also offered a generous multi-prize raffle with Hundred’s of dollars of value in prizes, two money boards and a loaded complimentary kiosk with plenty on offer to refuel our exhausted swimmers.

This year’s skins 25m freestyle event saw Fiona Cheesman from the Sinkers hold out a fast finishing Kylie Smith from the pioneer club parents. This is an ongoing elimination sprint until we have the final 2 swimmers battle it out in an exhausting final swim.

After the event many swimmers and guests moved to the Mt. Pleasant tavern to enjoy a meal and beverage of choice to round out a fantastic day.

We thank:

  • All swimmers and guests for their efforts in attending from near and far
  • The Pioneer Swimming club who provided the timing and operator
  • Our referees, JB, Peter Nolan and Rob Lucas
  • And all club members who assisted in the set-up, pull down, kiosk and time keeping

The event is always the last Saturday in February and well worth considering as a destination swim to explore Mackay and the hinterland.

Our next event is our annual OWS at Balnagowan on Sunday 6th November 2022 with a choice of 1.25, 2.5 & 5k on offer with the King & Queen of the river titles as part of the mix. A fabulous and picturesque freshwater reach of the Pioneer River.
