Coaching Profile – Nic Pirie

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast I spent majority of my childhood from toddler stage swimming, surfing and doing nippers (Noosa, Peregian, Yanchep WA, Mullaloo WA).

After a long break from swimming I discovered Aqualicious in 2009. I joined for a bit of routine and not to compete, but thanks to a very inspirational coach that quickly changed and the rest is history. At the moment I am swimming 5 times a week in the pool and once a fortnight in the ocean. As part of challenging myself, I am currently swimming the majority of my main sets backstroke.

Setting some courageous goals each year helps to keep me motivated to keep pushing the envelope (e.g. 20km Pool Swim 2016, World Masters Games 2017).

I’m also coaching at Brisbane Southside as part of the Coaching Team. I try to set a clear ‘story’ when I coach – warm up/main set/warm down. I aim to keep the main sets as interesting as possible while generally repetitive, either working on volume or speed – while working towards a common goal for the squad.
