New MSQ President – Cheryl Brodribb

Welcome to our new Masters Swimming Queensland President, Cheryl Brodribb.

Cheryl is a member of the Cairns Mudcrabs and a qualified masters’ coach and technical official. She is a former competitive swimmer, and now volunteers her support in any way she can. With husband Brian, they travel to major MSQ events to assist as officials. Cheryl is extremely generous with the time she devotes to MSQ and as the VP North for the past 5 years, she has been committed to assisting clubs to growing their membership and increase swim meets/postal swims. Cheryl coordinated the inaugural MSQ OWS at Lake Barrine offering three swim distances and sanctioned by Rottnest Chanel Swim, Perth. Cheryl is the Meet Convenor for the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games and has been our Minutes Secretary for many years.

Cheryl was recently voted as the MSQ Official of the Year for 2019. You can read all about the wonderful work she has done for MSQ, and her swimmer profile here.

A message from your President:

I am grateful to have been endorsed as the new MSQ President.  I look forward to working with the Board members and continuing the excellent work of our past Presidents.  The Board is a good mix of experienced and new members, who will bring a fresh approach to the MSQ Board.  Thank you to our returning members and welcome to the new members.

I have enjoyed being VP North and thank all the North Region clubs for their support during this time.  I enjoyed catching up with North Region members at swim meets, both pool and open water swims, and I will continue to support the local swim meets and hopefully the more southern clubs of this region also.

Although we live in Cairns, we travel regularly to Brisbane and the Gold Coast to visit family. I am looking forward to making some of these visits to coincide with swim meets in the South, Sunshine and Central regions, once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

We are currently in the planning stage for the 2021 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games (GBRMG) to be held in Cairns with swimming 20 – 22 May.  It is going to be a wonderful event, as usual, and I encourage our members to venture north for a swim vacation, to join us for a fun meet, then enjoy the Great Barrier Reef and surrounds during your stay here.

The next BMB meeting is scheduled for 13 July and a decision will be made with regards to swim meets for the remainder of the year. Naturally, this will depend on advice from the Government.  The 2020 Pan Pacs committee are still hopeful of their event going ahead and continue with their planning.  The swimming is 11 – 14 November.

I am looking forward to working with the BMB to streamline processes such as our Board meetings, having all our documents up to date and assisting with the development of the coaching team plus the restructuring of the recording portfolio.

My vision for MSQ is to continue with the excellent work of our past Presidents and to hopefully implement some new programs, in conjunction with our Coaching Directors, including to support our members who enjoy their postal swims.

I would like to thank Christina for all her work in the preparation for the AGM.  This was a very unusual AGM and required implementing strategies for MSQ to be able to hold this legally and on time.

All Board members and Christina are here to assist our members so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or suggestions.

Stay safe and hopefully we will be back at the pool swimming and coaching soon.
