Maryborough Masters Meet Summary 2022

The Maryborough Masters Meet was held on 15 October 2022.

Maryborough is a town ripe with charm and heritage. The old town hall, adjacent to the block in which the pool complex is located, is set amongst small, picturesque lawns and park. It’s a great place to take a coffee, find a park seat under a shady camphor laurel and relax to the tunes of a busker strumming easy country rock. A good place to be. It was fitting that, as the town hall clock tower tolled ten times, heat 1 of event 1 (the 400 IM) opened a relaxed meet at the pool.

While no records were broken at the meet there were some very respectable efforts from competitors. Shelley Devers, Lexie Steffan and Chris Rowland were on fire, each posting 3 PB’s on the day. Shelley’s 200 IM was 5.38 secs inside her best stop. Lexie 50 Back was a massive 6.56 secs under her previous best and Chris lopped 6.57 secs off her best 200 Free. Peter Johnstone was outstanding taking 8.49 secs of his previous best 100 Back and John Simonidis receives a notable mention reducing his 100 Butterfly by 6 secs.

Champion club went to Belgravia who showed the value of teamsmanship to receive the award. With a small contingent of four women competing, the ladies represented their club in all individual events available and both women’s relays which tipped the numbers in their favour over the bigger teams from Noosa and Hervey Bay.

The dash for cash races, sponsored by Adaptive Fish Swimming, were won by Sharon Roberts and John Quinn respectively. After being told he was starting off ‘scratch’ and his next rival dived at 19 secs John’s eyes lit up (like Popeye with a can of spinach!) and he book ended the meet nicely with a clear win in his race.

All attendees then relaxed with a hamburger and desserts at the convivial award ceremony followed by warm farewells. Congratulations to all swimmers, thank you for your support and we hope to see you next year.
