John McKaig: From Rehabilitation to Record Breaker
A Townsville Champion’s Road to States.
When John McKaig steps onto the pool deck at the Masters Swimming Queensland State Championships in Townsville, he will carry with him not just an extraordinary record of achievement, but a story of perseverance that began far from the podium.
McKaig’s journey into Masters swimming started at age 40, not with medals in mind, but with the simple hope of easing chronic back pain. After twelve difficult years, he finally reached a point where swimming became part of his recovery. What began as rehabilitation soon revealed something more, a spark of competitive joy that would reshape the next two decades of his life.
At 45, McKaig spotted an advertisement for a local Masters carnival and decided to give it a try. He had fun, he felt strong, and he rediscovered the thrill of racing. That same year, he entered his first National Championships and stunned the field by winning the 50m Freestyle. It was the beginning of a remarkable career in Masters swimming.
Today, McKaig stands as one of Australia’s most decorated Masters athletes. In 2024, he achieved the extraordinary distinction of being ranked World No. 1 in the 100m Butterfly (Short Course) for the 55–59 age group. His record list is staggering: 24 National Records, 45 Queensland Records, won 34 National Championship events, and 93 State Championships events. At the 2024 Queensland Masters Short Course Championships, he was named Male Swimmer of the Meet, further cementing his status as a dominant force in the pool.
His international achievements are equally impressive. McKaig has collected medals across multiple World Masters Games and World Championships campaigns, including:
- 2017 World Masters Games: 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze
- 2023 World Championships: 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze
- 2024 World Championships: 2 Silver, 2 Bronze
- 2025 World Championships: 1 Silver, 2 Bronze
Yet despite the accolades, McKaig remains grounded in the simple joy that first brought him back to the water. He trains with purpose, races with passion, and continues to inspire swimmers of all ages who see in him the proof that setbacks can become springboards.
As Townsville prepares to host the State Championships, McKaig arrives not just as a favourite, but as a testament to what dedication, and a love of swimming, can achieve. He has gone from a man seeking relief from pain to a world‑ranked athlete rewriting record books, his journey is one of resilience, longevity, and the quiet confidence of someone who knows exactly why he swims.
He is waiting in Townsville and ready once again to dive in and race for the sheer joy of it.
