Fun in Feb 2026
The Fun in Feb 2026 event delivered a strong showcase of regional Masters swimming, with 47 competitors representing five clubs and contributing to a well‑run, community‑driven meet at the North Mackay Sinkers’ traditional home pool.
The 2026 edition marked the 15th year of the Fun in Feb meet, first held in 2012 and now firmly established as a highlight on the regional calendar. Swimmers from the North Mackay Sinkers, Barbarians, Mackay Tri Club, Gladstone Gropers, and Swim Fast teams competed across a full program of 400m, 100m, 50m, and 25m events in all strokes. The meet maintained its reputation for friendly competition, strong participation, and a welcoming atmosphere for both new and returning Masters swimmers.
The event was further strengthened by the attendance of MSQ President Susanne Milenkevich and MSQ Director of Recording Sam Brown, who travelled from Brisbane to gain a regional perspective on meet delivery, club engagement, and the unique challenges and opportunities of North Queensland events. Their presence was warmly received and appreciated by organisers and participants alike.
Typical of the season, the weather threatened early and delivered a brief burst of “liquid sunshine”, but conditions soon cleared to provide a comfortable and enjoyable if warm environment for racing. Once underway, the meet ran smoothly, with swimmers demonstrating strong effort, positive spirit, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.
The supportive atmosphere extended well beyond the lanes. Families, volunteers, and club members contributed to a vibrant pool deck, reinforcing the community‑centred nature of Masters swimming in the region.
The success of the meet was made possible through the combined efforts of many individuals and organisations: The Sinkers in particular would like to acknowledge the following:
- Kerry from Pioneer Swimming Club who provided and operated electronic timing, ensuring accurate and efficient results.
- John Barrett (JB) officiated as referee, offering his expertise and steady guidance across the program.
- Masters Swimming Queensland was sincerely thanked for its ongoing support of the Sinkers and regional events, with this year’s leadership attendance adding particular value.
- Numerous volunteers assisted with set‑up, pack‑down, marshalling, MC duties, and timekeeping, contributing to a well‑coordinated and enjoyable meet experience.
Our recently organised pool records register (Thanks Sam!) will be in play this year with a review to see if any local pool records tumbled. This is a new highlight for our swimmers and will be advised in the coming week.
With the pool events concluded, swimmers and family reconvened at the Mt. Pleasant tavern for the evening to celebrate a late valentine “Love of Swimming” Red theme.
With thanks to our Sponsors: Bunnings, Dan Murphies, the Mt. Pleasant Tavern and members for contributions towards our multi-draw prize pool.
