Big Barrine Bash – 3Bs OWS

Lake Barrine – 1 December 2019

Masters swimming Queensland hosted their annual Big Barrine Bash OWS on Sunday 1 December 2019 at Lake Barrine on the Atherton Tablelands.  It was a perfect sunny day with ideal conditions on the lake.

The swim was sanctioned by MSQ plus the Rottnest Channel Swim Association as a pre swim for their 2020 channel swim.  Swims offered were 10k, 5k, 2.5k and a 4 x 2.5k relay.  There were 81 swimmers on the day with entries from the Brisbane region, Townsville, Cairns, Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands.  The 10k had 12 swimmers, the 5k 17 swimmers, the 2.5k 40 swimmers plus 3 relay teams.  Officials were John Barrett and Cheryl Brodribb.

For the 10k swim a time of 4 ¼ hours was allocated for completion of the swim as per the Rottnest Channel Swim rules.  Good luck to the solo and team swimmers who will be travelling to Perth for the 2020 Rottnest swim.

Thank you to the local Masters’ clubs who assisted MSQ prior to and on the day with planning and setting the course, registrations,  lap counters, feeder persons for the 10k & 5k swimmers, food and paddlers.  A special thank you to the Etty Bay SLSC who provided paddlers/safety on the water and non-Masters’ members who assisted on the day. Your time is gratefully appreciated.

Thank you to Steve Curry and family from the Lake Barrine Tea House for your support of our swims.  A big thank you for the use of the Ferro boat as a feeder and lap counter station plus the aluminium dinghy to transfer people.  Family and friends of the swimmers kept the Tea House busy throughout the morning and then many enjoyed a delicious lunch after the completion of the swims.

Thank you to Brothers Cairns Sports Club for the Grant to purchase 10 two-way radios for use at our OWS plus pool deck for our State Championships, Pan Pacs and GBRMG.

We look forward to welcoming swimmers to our 2020 swim on 6 December. 😊
