Making Waves at Raby Bay: 2025 MSQ State Championships OWS
A record turnout, perfect conditions, and community spirit mark MSQ’s first open water event at Raby Bay—with eyes now set on the upcoming MSA National OWS Championships.
Raby Bay, Sunday 9th November 2025
Ideal conditions greeted swimmers at the MSQ State Championships Open Water Swim, held for the first time at Raby Bay, Cleveland. This event marked the conclusion of the State Championships, following three days of pool competition at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. A total of 54 swimmers participated, including 17 non-masters members. The 3km event attracted 29 entrants, while 25 swimmers took on the 1.5km course, both raced over a 750m rectangular circuit.
Local councillor Peter Mitchell officiated as race starter, with water safety provided by the Point Lookout Surf Lifesaving Club. Tom from 1300Medics was on standby on shore. MSQ Director of Technical Services, Lori Chaplin, served as race referee, assisted by Gary Shepherdson, who also supplied the turn buoys and oversaw course setup.
After a successful pool meet earlier in the week, Justin Giles of Gympie Gold Fins continued his winning streak by taking line honours in the 3km event. In the 1.5km race, Ally Zillman—owner of Swim Tours Australia and the event’s major sponsor—was first across the line.
The top male and female finishers in each event received a waterproof car seat towel, courtesy of Kylie from Towel Society. Congratulations to:
- 1.5km winners: Ally Zillman and Rick Mitchell
- 3km winners: Justin Giles and Georgina Keily
A random prize draw for a two-night swim tour with Swim Tours Australia, valued at over $1,500, was held after presentations. Congratulations to Sophie Brennan, the lucky winner—and we’re delighted to share that Sophie has already booked her swim tour for next year! A huge thank you to Ally and Jae for their generous donation. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Swim Tours Australia as sponsors of MSQ’s open water events.
The Redlands Bayside Masters swimming club played a key role in delivering the event, providing most of the equipment and a dedicated team of volunteers. Special thanks to club President Brenda Wright and all club members for supporting MSQ in bringing open water swims to Brisbane.
MSQ also wishes to thank the following supporters:
- Redland City Council and Cr Peter Mitchell
- Point Lookout Surf Lifesaving Club
- 1300Medics
- Maritime Safety Queensland
- North Mackay Sinkers Masters Club (for the use of their timing system)
- Bendigo Bank (Cleveland branch) for marquees and banners
Thank you to all swimmers and volunteers for making MSQ’s first open water event at this venue such a success. We look forward to planning and hosting more open water swims at Raby Bay in the future. It truly takes a team effort to deliver a successful event.
The next open water swim hosted by MSQ will be the MSA National OWS Championships, taking place on Sunday 3 May 2026. Keep your eye out for details!
