Crater Lake Classic Returns in 2025

After a six-year break, the Crater Lake Classic Open Water Swim made a triumphant return to the pristine waters of Lake Barrine on the Atherton Tablelands on Sunday 13 April.

A total of 48 swimmers, aged between 22 and 65, took on the challenge of the triangular 500m course under blustery and ever-changing conditions. Twenty swimmers completed the 3km swim, while 28 competitors opted for the 1.5km event, showing incredible determination and resilience in the face of gusty winds and choppy water.

It was fantastic to see a mix of seasoned open water swimmers and first-time participants come together to embrace the challenge. Your positive energy and teamwork helped the event run smoothly — thank you all!

A special shout-out goes to the people and organisations who made this event possible:

  • Queensland National Parks and Wildlife

  • Nalita and her team at the Lake Barrine Teahouse

  • Masters Swimming Queensland – for sanctioning and co-hosting the event

  • North Mackay Sinkers – for the use of their timing system

  • Scott Peden, Chief Timekeeper

  • Karen Whitworth, Chief Referee

  • Gordonvale Physiotherapy & Mission Consulting Solutions – our valued sponsors

  • Water safety crew – Michael, Adrian, Glen, Dave, Rob, Greg, and Doug

  • And of course, all the amazing Mudcrabs volunteers who gave up their own swims to help run the day!

While it was truly a team effort, we’d like to give a huge thank you to Theresa, our incredible open water swim coordinator, for leading the charge from start to finish.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re thrilled to be bringing open water swimming back to the Tablelands.
