MSQ Leads the Way in Multi Class Swimming

Masters Swimming Queensland Leads the Way in Multi Class Swimming Opportunities

Masters Swimming Queensland (MSQ) is committed to inclusivity and excellence in Masters Swimming in Australia by fostering opportunities for classified Multi Class swimmers aged 18 and over. As a leader in providing fair and competitive environments, MSQ continues to support all adult swimmers, enabling them to thrive regardless of their abilities.

Since 2018, MSQ has actively implemented recognition programmes for classified swimmers at major events, starting with the introduction of medals for Multi Class athletes at the State Championship level. This initiative has since evolved to include prestigious awards such as the Multi Class Swimmer of the Meet, and now adoption of the MSQ Multi Class State records, reflecting MSQ’s unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity and celebrating excellence in adult swimming.

A Legacy of Inclusion

The journey began at the 2018 MSQ State Championships in Rockhampton, under the leadership of then MSQ President Rachael Keogh. This marked the debut of a platform where classified swimmers could compete within their classifications and receive recognition for their efforts.

In 2023, the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games (GBRMGs) extended the awards with Meet Convenor Cheryl Brodribb introducing the inaugural GBRMGs Multi Class Swimmer of the Meet award. This new accolade complemented the traditional Female and Male Swimmer of the Meet awards, further embedding inclusivity into the event. The award’s first recipient, Celeste Labuschagne (SB9 and S10) of QLT Long Tan Legends in Townsville, set the standard for future champions.

In March 2024, MSQ’s commitment reached new heights with the introduction of Female and Male Multi Class Swimmer of the Meet awards at the State Championships held at Chandler Aquatic Centre, Brisbane. MSQ President Susanne Milenkevich presented the inaugural awards to Chelsea Stubbings (S14) of QSM Brisbane Southside Masters and Mick Schuddinh (S12) of QMM Miami Masters, celebrating their remarkable achievements.

Establishing Multi Class Records

Recognising the importance of setting measurable goals, MSQ has taken a groundbreaking step by compiling the competition results of all past and present classified Multi Class swimmers into a complete set of records for Long and Short Course competition for Queensland Masters Swimmers – a first in Australia Masters Swimming.

These records, collated by MSQ President Susanne Milenkevich, and reviewed and refined by clubs and members, were officially adopted by the MSQ Board in late 2024. Establishment record certificates have been created to present to swimmers who have set the establishment records in recognition of this milestone.

These records serve as a source of inspiration for multi class swimmers, providing benchmarks to strive toward and fostering a sense of accomplishment in competitive swimming.

Pioneering the Future of Inclusive Swimming

Masters Swimming Queensland continues to lead the way in supporting and recognising the efforts of all adult swimmers in Queensland. Through the introduction of innovative programmes and awards, MSQ ensures that Multi Class swimmers have equal opportunities to showcase their talent and pursue their passion.

As MSQ strengthens its reputation as a pioneer in inclusivity, the organisation invites all adult swimmers to join its journey. Together, they aim to redefine competitive swimming by breaking barriers and celebrating diversity.
